A Title Tag is a small piece of code that goes into the header of every web page. If you're familiar with the code of your pages, then the Title Tag are the words between the sections. Whatever is entered here will display on the top of the browser window when a user is viewing that page. This helps to let your viewers know what that page is all about.

Make sure your title tags are not stuffed with keywords. Key word stuffing used to be the craze back in the day but today it will just hurt your online image as far as Google is concerned. A good title tag can do wonders for your search engine rank in Google but a bad title tag can make Google ignore you. Don't piss off the boss (Google is our boss in the SEO world whether we like it or not) and make sure your title tags are a good representation of your business with key words carefully placed throughout.

Meta tags are the blocks which contain information about the contents of your web page and they exist into the head area of your web page. They are basically meant to communicate with the search engine. Most of the Meta tags are visible to the search engine only and not the visitor on your web page. But, Title tag is one which is visible to the search engine and the visitor as well.

Think of a title tag as the name above a shop. Imagine you are walking down a busy street with shops on either side of you. However every shop window is boarded up and all that is visible is its name. You mean to purchase a new Hi-Fi system and need to locate a suitable store. You look at all the names but are getting confused as to which one is for you.

Some guidelines say that the title tag should be no longer than 70 characters. It is true that only the first 70 characters will show in the top bar of the browser, but search engine robots will read the rest of the tag and the search engines will not penalize you for going over the 70 character mark.

Search engines read your web site title and page contents, and if your web site title matched and thematic to your page contents, then your page will ranked high for the keyword phrases used in the title tag. If your web site title text differs from your page contents, your rank will be zero. So be careful while preparing your web page title.
